How to avoid an encounter with a wolf
An encounter with a wolf is one of the scariest scenarios that can unfold in the forest. The predator’s height ranges from 66-86 centimetres and body length is 105-160 centimetres – it’s almost impossible to fight him. And it also has 42 teeth, strong legs and instincts that help detect fear of potential prey. Fortunately, humans are not the most familiar prey for wolves. This does not mean that they ignore people, but they do not attack at every encounter. But it’s best to reduce the likelihood of an encounter.
Don’t go where wolves have been spotted. Even after the information about predators appears, many people still go to their territory and believe that they will be lucky.
Assess the situation and stay vigilant. Wolf tracks (they look like dog tracks) are a reason to change your route and head for home.
Keep children, sick and elderly people in the centre of the group. Wolves always attack the weakest, so they need to be covered by those whom the animals consider more dangerous. A large group of people, in which there is no obvious candidate for the role of prey, the predator can bypass.
Make a fire at a rest stop. Fire and smoke will scare off the animal if it wanders near you.
Clean up after your dog’s faeces. If you’ve taken your pet for a walk, clean up after it. Otherwise, you may attract the attention of a wolf.
What to do if you meet a wolf
If you can not avoid the meeting, you will have to overcome fear and prepare for a fight. Fortunately, it is not guaranteed – sometimes you can wait it out.
Calm down. An ill-considered decision can cost lives, so you need to keep your composure even when you are very afraid.
