Survival myths that could cost you your life

Look for food
The characters in some survival shows try to stock up on food first and foremost. They immediately go in search of some grubs, collect snails, make snares for birds and fishing rods.

In fact, a person can live without food for about two months. But only if he has access to water. Without it, he will last about a week, and that – in comfortable conditions, not in the wilderness, when the situation is unpredictable and can change at any moment.

Therefore, first of all, it is necessary to look for water and shelter, and think about food in the last place.

Eating plants and drinking their juice
The most exciting episodes of survival programmes show us the hero bravely chewing grass and eating raw mushrooms. “What animals eat, humans can eat quite safely,” they explain.

This advice can only work if you are experienced enough to choose non-hazardous plants among many species. Otherwise, do not try unknown berries, leaves, stems, fruits and seeds. No matter how attractive they look, they may be poisonous. Some should not even be touched to avoid a burn or allergic reaction.

If you eat something inedible, at best you will experience mild food poisoning accompanied by vomiting and diarrhoea, which will lead to rapid dehydration. At worst, you will die.
