Embarrassing questions about mental health

Can poor diet and nutrition, stress lead to mental problems?
In fact, no one knows exactly what provokes mental disorders. Most likely, they are provoked by genetic, psychological and social factors at the same time.

But a person’s daily routine and ability to rest have a very strong influence on our mental state.

Many people overwork and burn out, which increases their anxiety and can lead to depression.

Mental state also depends on nutrition. With poor nutrition we can get vitamin deficiencies, iron deficiencies or some other deficiencies, which among other things can affect mental health. For example, iron deficiency anaemia can provoke depression and anxiety.

Thyroid problems, such as autoimmune thyroiditis, can cause depression. Depressive symptomatology can often accompany inflammatory processes in the body.

Separately, it is worth highlighting intoxication states, when a person uses drugs or alcohol or receives serious poisoning at harmful production. Against this background, psychosis, hallucinations, delusional symptomatology may occur.

Do antidepressants and other drugs for mental illnesses cause dependence?
No, they do not. There is one class of drugs that can cause dependence, and there are debates about it. These are benzodiazepine tranquillisers, which are rarely prescribed to treat the acute symptoms of psychosis, when there are hallucinations. Sometimes they are still used to treat anxiety. These drugs can form a tolerance to their amount.

Antidepressants, antipsychotics and all the rest are not addictive. They are prescribed in a course depending on the condition. Sometimes, in cases where it is not possible to maintain a long remission without medication, a decision may be made to take a particular drug for life. But this is not the most common practice.
