How to know when it’s time to see an ophthalmologist

Narrowing of lateral vision, appearance of iridescent circles when looking at light sources
This, as well as painful sensations in the head, temples, eyes, the need for frequent replacement of corrective devices are quite alarming symptoms that may be the cause of the initial stage of glaucoma. This is a disease in which intraocular pressure increases and irreversible changes occur in the optic nerve.

Glaucoma is incurable, but thanks to the possibilities of laser surgery and drug therapy it is possible to stabilise the indicators, preserve vision and live a full life.

Like cataract, the disease is “getting younger” every year. Patients 55+ should pay special attention to unpleasant symptoms, as natural age-related changes begin during this period and the visual system is the most vulnerable.

Difficulties with reading text near or far away
As well as double vision, blurred images, and the need to focus indicate refractive disorders, i.e. deterioration of vision. This can be myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, presbyopia (age-related hyperopia).

Violations can occur at any age. As a rule, the problem is solved by laser correction, implantation of phakic lenses, wearing glasses or soft contact lenses.

Such manifestations can be combined with more serious diagnoses, such as cataract, glaucoma, retinal degeneration.

When it is necessary to consult an ophthalmologist as a matter of urgency
If you have any of the symptoms listed above, you should not self-medicate. Be sure to make an appointment with a doctor to determine the cause of such manifestations and timely appointment of appropriate treatment.

But there are other, more dangerous conditions that should never be ignored. Call an ambulance or immediately go for examination if:

Experiencing sharp, persistent eye pain.
You have suffered an eye injury.
A foreign body, chemical agents have fallen into the eye.
Suddenly worsened visual acuity, narrowed visual fields.
In front of the eyes do not pass spots, flies.
The lens has got under the upper eyelid and you can’t get it out.
Why you should not delay a visit to the doctor
Clear symptoms of some dangerous diseases often appear only at late stages, which is why it is so important to be examined in time.

Make it a rule to undergo regular comprehensive eye examinations:

Once a year, if there are no complaints and aggravating factors.
Twice a year and more often – at the discretion of the attending physician in the presence of glaucoma, cataracts, age-related farsightedness, as well as related diseases. For example, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular pathologies.
Such examination is carried out with the help of various diagnostic equipment – this is a guarantee that you will be able to take measures in time and avoid serious complications in the future.
